Happy New Year 2006

Hm. Not sure how to best scan markered drawings. >_>

What started as a mindless sketch has turned into something that actually holds some meaning for me. The writing on the lanterns reads "Halmonee" which means "grandma" in korean. I wanted to make a new years work that reflected how I felt about the day, and I remember going to my uncle's house as a little girl, dressed in a "hambok" where my cousins and I bowed to my grandfather's photograph and my grandmother and received money. I remember not liking it very much or understanding what the big deal was. Ever since my halmonee died, new years has become an extraneous day, so we often don't meet as a family anymore. I just wish I'd understood the meaning of this ritual sooner.

Characters: Colin, Dutch, and Michael from Rococo Eternal
In this particular drawing, Colin is the "self", Dutch is death, and Michael is memory.
